About this project

We have recently attended a property in Mitcham to assess the existing consumer unit, meter equipment and associated electrical connections. The client wanted a professional electrician to inspect the installation and check that the electrical equipment was safe, correctly arranged and suitable for continued use. The property had a number of electrical components installed within the same cupboard area, including the consumer unit, electricity meter, isolator equipment and older control devices. Where electrical equipment has been altered over time, it is important to check that the installation remains safe, clearly identifiable and accessible for future maintenance. Inspection of the Electrical Installation📍 Our electrician carried out a visual inspection of the consumer unit and surrounding equipment, checking the condition of the enclosures, circuit protection, cabling and earthing arrangements. We also considered the layout of the installation, as crowded meter cupboards can make future testing, fault-finding and maintenance more difficult if equipment is not clearly organised. The consumer unit was examined to ensure that the circuits and protective devices could be accessed safely. The meter and main supply equipment were also reviewed, with particular care taken around the incoming electrical supply and isolator arrangement. For safety reasons, electricians cannot alter the DNO service head or main incoming supply equipment. However, where anything outside the customer’s installation needs attention, we can advise the homeowner, landlord or managing agent on the correct next steps and whether the electricity supplier or network operator needs to be contacted. Electrical Safety and Future Improvements📍 A consumer unit is the heart of a property’s electrical installation. It protects the wiring and circuits throughout the home, helping to reduce the risk of electric shock, overheating and fire when fitted with suitable modern protective devices. During an electrical inspection, we look for visible signs of damage, missing covers, poorly supported cables, outdated protective devices and limited access around the consumer unit. We also check whether the installation would benefit from upgrades such as RCBO protection, surge protection devices or improved labelling. In properties with older electrical equipment or multiple supply arrangements, a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is often recommended. This provides a more detailed inspection and test of the fixed wiring, sockets, lighting circuits and consumer unit, with a clear report on the overall condition of the installation.
