Smart Home Lighting Ideas for London — 9 Upgrades That Save Money

Smart home lighting scene controlled from a mobile phone

Smart lighting is now mainstream. Here are the nine upgrades that deliver the biggest wow-factor and the fastest payback in a London home.

Why smart lighting is finally worth it in 2026

Two things changed in the last three years:

  1. Prices dropped. A Shelly Dimmer 2 module now costs less than a mid-range plate switch, so smart control is no longer a luxury upgrade.
  2. Standards converged. With Matter over Thread and the rise of local Home Assistant, you can mix Philips Hue, Lutron and Aqara without cloud lock-in.

The result: a properly designed smart lighting scheme in a London home now pays back in energy savings and lamp life alone within 3 – 5 years, not counting the massive lift in comfort.

1. Retrofit smart dimmer modules behind existing plates

Our favourite upgrade for period properties. A Shelly Dimmer 2 or Sonoff D1 sits behind the existing switch plate. No visible change, full app control, works with any 2-wire circuit.

  • Best for: hallways, landings, living rooms
  • Approx. cost fitted: £110 – £150 per switch

2. Full Lutron RA2 Select scenes

For a whole-house system, Lutron RA2 Select is still our top recommendation. Elegant tactile keypads, rock-solid reliability, and the best-in-class trailing-edge dimming performance for LED.

Typical starter kit for a 3-bed house: £2,400 – £3,600 installed.

3. Circadian ceiling lighting

Warm-white at night, cool-white by day, dimmed to match the sun — automatically. This dramatically improves sleep and productivity. Best delivered with Hue White Ambiance or Loxone Tree downlights.

4. PIR-controlled utility rooms

Cupboards, larders, WCs and utility rooms are the biggest source of accidental waste. A properly wired PIR sensor with delay-off cuts consumption to zero and stops kids leaving the WC light on all day.

5. Under-cabinet and plinth lighting

The single most-loved kitchen upgrade. Add CRI 90+ LED strip with a smart driver, and use scenes for cooking (bright), dining (warm 2200 K) and midnight snacking (dim red-orange).

6. Dimmable smart bathroom mirrors

Legal in Zone 2 and beyond in a UK bathroom, IP-rated smart mirrors with LED perimeters and colour-temp adjustment are becoming a genuine daily-use upgrade.

7. Voice + app + physical control

Please, never rely on voice-only or app-only control. Every room should still have a real switch on the wall — for guests, kids and low-battery situations.

8. Zoned outdoor lighting

Path lights, wall lights, tree uplights and step lights — all zoned separately and scheduled by dusk sensor. Uses about 8 – 12 W per zone with quality LED and looks incredible.

9. Whole-home scenes tied to routines

Once you have zones and dimmers, tie them to routines:

  • Wake: hallway and kitchen fade up 20 minutes before the alarm
  • Leave home: everything off, hallway on 5 %, security lights armed
  • Evening: kitchen at 30 %, living room at 60 %, all warm-white
  • Movie: everything off except bias lighting behind the TV
