Do you actually need a dedicated EV charger?

Technically you can charge from a 3-pin socket at 2.3 kW, but nobody serious does. A dedicated 7 kW smart charger delivers a full charge overnight, protects your circuits, and unlocks off-peak tariffs like Octopus Intelligent and EDF GoElectric.

The real reasons to install a proper wall-box are:

  • 3× faster charging than a 3-pin socket
  • Load management so it never trips the incoming supply
  • Smart scheduling to charge at 7p per kWh instead of 30p+
  • Solar integration if you have PV on the roof
  • Type 2 socket compatibility with every modern EV

7 kW vs 22 kW — which do you need?

Almost every London home is on a single-phase supply, which is limited to 7.4 kW for EV charging. You only get 22 kW on a 3-phase supply, which is uncommon in residential streets and involves a DNO application.

Our advice for most London homeowners:

  • Choose 7 kW if: you have a single-phase supply, off-street parking and one EV
  • Choose 22 kW if: you already have 3-phase, run a small business fleet, or need multi-EV load-balancing

Tethered vs untethered chargers

  • Tethered — the cable is permanently attached. Faster to plug in, but you are stuck with whatever length was fitted.
  • Untethered — socket only, bring your own cable. Neater, future-proof, and lets you use both Type 1 and Type 2 vehicles.

We install both. For most modern EVs we recommend untethered because cables are cheaper to replace and you can upgrade separately.

2026 EV charger installation costs in London

Typical fully-fitted, certified prices:

  • Standard install (up to 15 m cable run): £750 – £1,050
  • Long cable run (15 – 25 m, exterior clip or trunking): £950 – £1,350
  • Underground cable to detached garage/driveway: £1,200 – £1,800
  • Load management / CT clamp: included on all our jobs
  • Consumer unit upgrade (if required): £450 – £950 extra

Prices include the charger, dedicated 40A radial circuit, Type A + 6mA DC RCD protection, EV-specific SPD and full commissioning with the manufacturer app.

What about the OZEV grant?

The universal domestic EV Chargepoint Grant is now targeted at flat dwellers, renters and people without off-street parking. If you qualify you can get £350 off installation. Homeowners with driveways no longer qualify — but landlords, letting agents and freeholders still do.

Load management is not optional in London

Most London flats and terraces have an 80 A – 100 A single-phase supply. Add a 7 kW charger to an induction hob, immersion heater and electric shower, and you can easily exceed the supply capacity.

Every charger we install includes load management, which:

  • Reads the incoming current in real-time via a CT clamp
  • Throttles the EV charge speed if the house demand rises
  • Prevents nuisance tripping and expensive DNO callouts
